Who would have guessed that the largest living terrestrial mammal would visually have so much in common with a butterfly? After coming across the first photo, a quick google search showed me that there seems to be a trend of elephants rocking gorgeous butterfly wings painted on their ears. Ironically, elephants even sometimes flap their ears like butterflies do their wings, but it’s not because they expect to be lifted off the ground by their huge ear flaps. Rather, in hot temperatures flapping their ears helps to cool them down. They also sometimes do it as a form of communication to show excitement, joy, or to signal to other elephants with the sound their ears make when hitting against their skin.
