Here is a brilliant example of thinking outside the box. British expatriate Richie Sowa gave up his job as a carpenter and built his very own island paradise out of recycled plastic bottles. The island is located in a lagoon on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, south of Cancún.
Named Spiral Island, the artificial island uses nets filled with discarded tires and plastic as its floating foundation, which supports a structure of plywood and bamboo topped with sand and various plants.
The island also includes a garden where food is grown, including delicious beach grapes, bananas, tulipans, coconut, spinach, almonds and edible fruit cactus.
Most of the materials used to build Spiral Island were locally harvested, donated or thrown away and reused by its nomadic inhabitants.
